Factoids OEM vs Retail

OEM vs Retail

OEM Packaging

What is OEM and why is it different to Retail?

OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer.

OEM

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. This generally means you get the same item, but it costs less than Retail. This is mainly because it has less packaging (why would a computer manufacturer need manuals, CDs, nice boxes etc). Unfortunately, OEM also means that your warranty is reduced (possibly as low as 30 days) and normally has other restrictions (see Microsoft below). The manufacturer is expected to offer support and guarantees etc., but when you buy OEM items, you are effectively saying you are the manufacturer, so have very little come back if there are problems. Some retailers, us included, will ensure you are aware that you are buying OEM, and know the complications, before purchasing.

Retail

Retail means standard packaged items that you can buy in any shop or online. They are normally a little more expensive than OEM (to cover that packaging) but do come with a full warranty, instructions and CDs etc. We recommend Retail every time unless you know what you are doing, accept the risk or have a very tight budget.

Windows OEM

Microsoft Windows OEM is for use in new machines and although you can buy Windows OEM separately, it has different uses and legal requirements. Windows OEM comes with most pre-built computers and you can use it just like the retail version of Windows, but it is locked to the Motherboard of that computer. If you have a computer that is faulty or needs upgrading, you can happily change the memory or graphics card but not the motherboard. If you change the motherboard, then you will require a new licence of Windows. Windows Retail is yours to keep and install as you wish. If you sell your computer (and remove Windows) then you are free to install your Windows software on another computer. It is for this reason that all our custom built computers come with the Retail version, even though it is more expensive. We also only sell the full Windows Retail package. The simple rule is: OEM is stuck to the motherboard, Retail is free to roam.
