Laptop or Netbook? Which One is Right for You?

Mobile computing is essential for anyone who travels while working. It’s also a convenient way to move around your house while still browsing the Internet. When the time comes to purchase one of these machines, the decision must be made – netbook or laptop. Although the two types of machines are similar, they have different experiences and uses.

When is the Netbook the Right Choice?

Netbooks are much smaller and lighter than a laptop, they typically have a 10 to 12 inch screen. The monitor picture can be sized, similar to zooming in and out of an iPhone screen. Netbooks typically have a wireless and a hardwired network card, so users can install them in the office or use the device while traveling. Since the netbook is smaller in size, the keyboard and touch mouse is also smaller. For people with large hands, this may seem difficult to use.

Netbooks do not have the memory and CPU power to host memory-intensive applications such as games and multimedia creation software. These machines are best used by home office users, writers, students and people who just need a lightweight machine to surf the Internet from home.

When Should You Spend the Money on a Laptop?

Laptops are more powerful, and they can handle more heavy duty applications. With this extended power comes an additional price. Laptops are generally more expensive than Netbooks. A good laptop can cost hundreds more and sometimes double the cost of a good netbook. The first noticeable difference between a netbook and a laptop is size, weight and the monitor width. Laptops have large monitors useful for gaming and multimedia. Laptops are also a lot heavier, and they are convenient as lighter versions of desktop machines. Laptops are also more durable, such as the Lenova series. These laptops aren’t fancy, but they are durable enough to carry around on campus or to take with you while traveling.

As netbooks become more powerful, they slowly become the preferable mobile computing device. Even some powerful netbooks allow development applications such as Visual Studio .NET, SQL Server client software and Photoshop run smoothly.
