DC Power Jack Replacement

Laptop Jack

If your computer isn't charging you may need your power jack replaced.

Jack Replacement

A damaged or faulty jack can cause random issues with your laptop including randomly shutting down without any warning, flickering power lights and poor battery performance. Jacks come in two flavours - the soldered on ones and the harness ones (via a cable).

Replacing the DC Jack requires us to completely disassemble the laptop, desolder (or unhook) the faulty jack and replace with a new DC jack (if its soldered, we'll also clean the board first). The laptop is then tested in-situ and if all good, it's rebuilt. Poorly experienced engineers can easily damage the surrounding components.

Do I need a replacement power jack?

You'll likely need a jack replacement if the power only works when you are moving the power cord and if when plugged in the laptop looks dead (e.g. no lights, no activity etc). If you remove your battery and plug the charger into the jack and the lights stay on all the time when moving the jack around (e.g. gently move the plug from side to side, up and down) then its likely to NOT be a power jack replacement you'll need and further investigation will be needed.

Stop. Don't damage that jack!

Always make sure you remove your charger from the power jack when taking the laptop out and about - we have lots of customers arrive in-store with other issues and they leave the charger inside the jack. Power jacks are nearly always damaged from stress caused by the wobbling it about or yanking it from side to side. Be careful!
